There was a twitch in his forehead, a small spasm. His eyes shot open. It was black. Something was stretching over his face, constricting around the crown of his head. He pulled back, wanting to yell, but his body was so tired.
âStay still. We gotta get you into dry clothes.â Austin heard a familiar voice.
âIâm not taking his pants off,â Tommyâs voice said from somewhere in the darkness.
âI got it,â Austin was able to mumble out.
Austinâs hands grappled the soft cushions around him, his muscles tensing. He pulled himself to a sitting position. Blinking, he tried to gather himself, both mentally and physically.
âAll right. Just let me help get this shirt on.â Martin pulled the shirt the rest of the way off Austin.
Austin felt the constriction on his head release as the shirt released him. He could see again, but only darkness. It was the normal now, he remembered, not seeing. He felt gurgling within his abdomen, then something slithered up his throat. He coughed and gagged but spit up nothing. An acidic taste receded into the back of his throat.
Martin draped a new shirt over his friendâs head, trying to force Austinâs head through the opening.
Austin mumbled as he attempted to reach up and take control of the shirt. Instead, he fell to the side and toppled right off the couch, smacking his head against a table on his way down. All went black again.
This wasnât so different, he thought. It was dark, but he knew it wasnât because of the sun being gone. It was a different type of dark. This one was warm and quiet. He wanted warm. He wanted quiet. It was the only way he could hear. But he had things to do. What were they? He wasnât sure, but he knew they were important.
âAustin!â
He heard Martinâs voice and looked around. He could hear him but could not see him.
âAustin!â
That one was Tommy; he was sure of it. I canât see you guys, but I can hear you. If only they would come out. Didnât they know that they had things to do? There wasnât time for hiding, not now.
âAustin!â
He heard Martin again. Now he was getting mad. How was he going to hear anything with all that shouting? They didnât need to shout, just come out of hiding and speak to him like normal people. Where could they be hiding anyway? There is nowhere to hide in the dark, just emptiness. It was all so damn empty. He waited and listened, but another shout didnât come. Maybe they werenât there. Maybe he was alone. Was that his destiny anyway? Just being alone? At least it wasnât cold there, wherever he was. At least he could hear again.
Austin started shaking wildly, but he didnât see any arms grabbing ahold of him. He shook, and he shook, and he shook. He could feel himself taking the largest breath of his life. Had he not been breathing before? He couldnât remember. He shook again, this time harder. Sitting up, he swung his arms.
